Danang

We have just finished spending six days in Danang, the biggest city in central Vietnam. It is a gateway to Hoi An and Hue, and these days is a popular beach area for tourists and Vietnamese alike. It was also my favourite city in Vietnam by a wide margin. It is less oppressively hot than Saigon, less crowded than Hanoi, and has a great mix of old and new Vietnam. The city of Danang is also just a relaxed place to be, a stark contrast to Saigon and Hanoi.

I decided to treat us to a real hotel in Danang, and it was well worth the money. A great view of the river and a 10 minute cab ride to the sea. Although it is not tourist season at all (central and northern Vietnam have a real winter) it is still spectacular.

The first day we arrived we checked in late. It was pouring so I ended up venturing out just far enough to find a mart that specialized in Korean and Japanese food. I loaded up on ramen and headed back. The next day we explored Danang a bit, but also booked tours to Hue and a hotel in Hoi An, and went to the beach.

Danang is a great city for a beach vacation and also a gateway to Hue and Hoi An. I don't really know what else to say about it, as it was a city to relax in and enjoy the food and views rather than a city to write a lot about. I'll save that for Hue. Still, it joins Busan and Taipei as one of my favourite Asian cities to be in and hang out in. A very cool place.
